How to enjoy Alexandria beyond the usual tourist stops

How to enjoy Alexandria beyond the usual tourist stops

Why do most people travel to Egypt in the first place? Mostly for two reasons. Either they come to visit the pyramids or spend days on resorts of Sharm El Sheikh. And to their bad luck those people miss such a place as Alexandria city. But those who come here usually say the same thing: this is the most “European” and relaxed city on the Egyptian Mediterranean coast. With its long seafront, faded colonial buildings, fresh seafood and completely different atmosphere from Cairo or Hurghada, Alexandria feels like a completely different country.

If you want to see Egypt without the typical tourist crowds and souvenir hassle, this city is worth adding to your “to visit” list.

Why Alexandria feels unlike any other city in Egypt

Instead of noisy and dusty Cairo or a standard resort in the Red Sea towns (that won`t differ from any other resort) you can experience a true Mediterranean style city. It was built as a Greek settlement, later became Roman, then Ottoman, and later received a strong Italian and French influence in the 19th–20th centuries. This mix is still felt today.

The city is greener, windier, and much calmer. Locals walk along the Corniche in the evenings, drink coffee by the sea, and life here moves at a more relaxed pace.

Places that define the character of Alexandria

Qaitbay Citadel Alexandria

Qaitbay is for sure one of those places that you shouldn’t miss during your visit. This fort was built in the 15th century and is supposedly the remainder of the Lighthouse of Alexandria. It is one of the most photographed places in the city. Go in the late afternoon and you will get beautiful light and fewer people. Entrance costs about 60–100 EGP.

Bibliotheca Alexandrina

A striking modern building opened in 2002. Inside you’ll find one of the largest libraries in Africa, several museums, a planetarium and great views from the upper floors. It’s a perfect spot for those who love culture and architecture. The ticket price is around 70 EGP for foreigners.

Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa

One of the most underrated places in Alexandria. These underground tombs from the 2nd century AD show a unique mix of Egyptian, Greek and Roman styles. It’s cool underground (literally – temperature is much lower than on the street), so it’s comfortable even in summer. Seeing this “city of the dead” with your own eyes is one of the essential things to do in Alexandria Egypt.

The city beyond landmarks

The actual beauty of the town lies not in individual sights, not in the Alexandria city centre but in the mood:

  • Alexandria Corniche – This area allows you not only to swim, but has a very long (20 km) seaside walkroad. We would recommend having a walk there at sunset. It will definitely give you a lifetime memory.
  • Stanley Bridge and surrounding areas offer beautiful views and many good seafood restaurants.
  • Montaza Palace Gardens – Huge park with palaces, beaches and walking paths. A very good place if you have a relaxing day. The entrance will cost around 50 EGP.
  • El-Mursi Abu El Abbas Mosque – One of the most beautiful mosques in the city, featuring stunning architecture.
  • Attarine Market – Chaotic but authentic market where you can buy spices, antiques and local products.

Best ways to enjoy Alexandria as a traveler

  • Rent a bike or just walk along the Corniche in the morning or evening.
  • Try local seafood: grilled squid, shrimp tagine and sayadiya (fish with rice) in restaurants near the port.
  • Take the tram, the oldest one in Africa. Route No. 1 or 2 from downtown to Stanley or San Stefano.
  • Visit a traditional ahwa (coffee house) and enjoy the ocean view.
  • Go to a rooftop bar in the evening for views and cocktails.

Practical tips for planning a smooth visit

Best time to visit: April–May and September–October. Summer (June–August) is very hot and humid (+32–35°C with high humidity).

Choose what to wear: Despite being an Alexandria Mediterranean city, it is still quite conservative. Very revealing clothing will draw unwanted attention; it’s better to stick to a “modest casual” style.

How to get there:

  • Train from Cairo: 2.5–3.5 hours, tickets from 150–400 EGP.
  • Bus: Go Bus or West Delta, comfortable and cheap.

A list of good places to stay:

  • If you are looking for a luxurious palace to stay then you can pick a Four Seasons Alexandria at San Stefano
  • If you are looking for great views, then you can stay in Helnan Palestine Hotel in Montaza
  • If choosing from the budget hotels, it’s best to look to look around the Raml Station area

It is better to book a hotel with a sea view near such places as Misr Station or the waterfront. In this case all major Alexandria Egypt attractions are within easy reach.

Money tip: Most  small shops and restaurants won’t accept cards. So you need to be ready to pay in cash. ATMs are available, but sometimes run out of money on weekends.

Disadvantages worth knowing:

  • Public transport is crowded and not always punctual.
  • Some areas (especially old downtown) look quite worn out.
  • In summer the sea can be polluted near the center.
  • Service in restaurants can be slow.

Alexandria in Egypt is not a classic “wow” tourist destination like the pyramids. But if you like cities with soul, sea breeze, good food and a more relaxed pace, it can easily become one of your favorite places in Egypt.
